On a day like today in May, but in the year 2017, some news surprised the international libertarian movement when the PanAm Post published a story on the birth of the Cuban Libertarian Party – José Martí; that is, the first libertarian party in the entire history of Cuba had emerged, in the midst of a society victimized through more than half a century of a dictatorship that imposed Marxist doctrine exclusively through the coercion and terror.
The Cuban Libertarian Party is the fruit of the efforts of a few who, three years prior, on March 14, 2014, set out to sow the seeds of freedom in the very heart of one of the most devastating dictatorships that human history has ever known.
As was to be expected, the news not only positively surprised freedom lovers around the world, but it also shocked the Cuban dictators, who, as expected, soon responded with their own weapons. They seek to enslave the peoples, because they could not admit for any reason that the ideas of freedom, their main enemy, began to flourish in the midst of the thorns of slavery sown by the regime.
Arbitrary arrests, harassment, threats, unjust imprisonments, covert assaults, aggression of all kinds, humiliations and the lowest and dirty discredits, have all marked the short, but fruitful life of the Cuban Libertarian Party. Despite all adversities and hardships, they have survived by keeping alive the libertarian ideas that are enemies of slavery and injustice — ideas that undoubtedly mark the path towards a future of progress, justice, freedom and happiness.
Today, Cuban libertarians, in the eyes of the dictators, celebrate completing the second year of their victory, reaffirming their conviction to continue keeping alive, at all costs, the ideas of freedom, and reflecting in their hearts the living presence of Ubaldo Herrera Hernandez, our libertarian brother who suffers from the rigor of Cuban prisons, for the sole ‘crime’ of embracing the ideas of freedom and being consistent with them in his actions.
